Lisdoonvarna has been in the Matchmaking business for
150 years.
Matchmaking is an old traditions in Ireland and for hundreds of years,
Lisdoonvarna has been the main centre for that activity. The month of September
is Matchmaking season in the Calre town. With the hay saved and the turf home,
the farmers head for Lisdoonvarna in search of a wife.
The ancient tradition has been in decline and today there is just one official
Matchmaker left in County Clare: Willie Daly who lives in Ennistymon and
practices match making. Lisdoonvarna's annual festival has evolved into one of
Europe's largest single's event. People don't necessarily come to look for a
spouse anymore - they come in their thousands in search of a good time and by
God that is what they get in Lisdoonvarna.
